【2024 20IMPACT20 Diary of Resilience - Leg 1 Day 6】Outrunning the typhoon

2024 Nov 13

Written by: Sinyi and Viann (Leg 1)

Today was a day of unexpected twists and turns that taught us valuable lessons in adaptability and resilience.

Our original plan was to sail to Tolo Harbour, but when we heard of an impending typhoon warning, we quickly changed course and returned to shore. By 8am we were safely docked at Wong Shek Pier. While this change of plan was disappointing at first, it opened the door to new experiences.

Transitioning from sea to land activities posed its own challenges. The first challenge was feeling dizzy from the waves; just as we were getting used to life at sea, we had to return to solid ground, which was quite frustrating. After some discussion, we decided to embrace the day by conducting stream and mountain camping activities for the day.

It started raining heavily right at the beginning, but rather than let the weather dampen our spirits, we decided to see it as an opportunity for adventure. Our first challenge was at Hau Tong Kai, where we navigated over slippery rocks in the flowing stream. The icy water felt invigorating and refreshing, and when we stumbled upon a pool we took a quick, cool dip that left us laughing and rejuvenated.

In the afternoon we hiked to our campsite at Lei Tat Rock. The heavy rain made the climb challenging, but the stunning views around us were worth every step. Setting up camp in the wind and rain became a shared adventure, and despite the obstacles, we found joy in the experience.

After a long day, we gathered for a hot and spicy dinner, expertly prepared by our captain. The curry chicken was a delight, and sharing this meal in the rain became a cherished memory.

Just when we thought we could finally relax, we received news of a storm warning for 11pm. Frustration bubbled over as we packed our gear, but in the midst of the chaos we exchanged smiles that spoke volumes. It was a reminder that even in difficult moments, camaraderie and humour can lift our spirits.

Navigating down the mountain in the pouring rain was no mean feat. We slipped and stumbled, our rucksacks feeling heavier with each step. But we persevered, supporting each other along the slippery path. Arriving at the OBHK base, we were drenched and muddy, but grateful for our safe arrival just as the storm warning was announced.

Exhausted, we settled down in the cafeteria. We were so tired that we lay down to rest without taking a shower, with wet hair...

The journey is filled with challenges from the weather, but maybe growth and beautiful memories are left in the face of adversity. good night.
